August

Well, here we are closing in on the end of August, so here I am with my monthly update.

Not much to say, really. The banister is ALMOST complete. I did a bunch of electrical work this weekend (including, but not limited to, installing our bedside wall lamps, which somehow make our bedroom look BIGGER).

Thursday, Dana and Caroline leave for Chicago, leaving me home to listen to loud movies (I installed those surround speakers I was going to sneak-install while Dana was out of town), play videogames, and drink myself to sleep every night (much like she will be doing, minus the movies and videogames, to be sure).

Right now, waiting for dinner to finish - chicken breasts in wine with mushrooms, thyme and garlic. Smells delish. Thanks, naked chef cookbook.

That's really all I got for ya.

Enjoying Braid on the 360 at the moment. I'm holding off on getting into Metal Gear Solid until the day sometime off in the future when we finally get an HDTV. But DirecTV is coming Friday to install our HD DVR and new dish (free!), so the day I HEAR our bonuses are coming in, that TV is getting ordered. I may not have the willpower to wait for a new receiver/amp - as I discovered late last night after digging behind the ceiling for surround sound cables I hid before we finished construction down there, the left surround channel on my old Yamaha (purchased used in 1995 or '96) doesn't work. I'm sure you care.

Caroline is awesome. Pulling herself up on furniture, cruising (a little) on the same, and generally being an adorable little pain in the butt. I want to go to the zoo with her and Dana when we're in Chicago.

And may I note, I can't believe Dave and Keri are about to get married (and am THRILLED about it), and feel terrible that I missed his bachelor party this weekend. Thank god Pablo is a twit. Or, is it.. has been tweeting? I'm not sure of the terminology.

Dinner is ready. Time to go!

 Futbol, baby.
OK, so I don't know how many of you guys know out there about my love for soccer. Started playing when I was 6, 4 years of varsity in high school, 3 state championships, yaddayaddayadda. After I blew out my knee at 16, my dreams of scholarships turned from sports to academics. I think things worked out fairly well, and God bless adult league soccer in a small town. Anyway....

I still like following the US Women's Team. Because a) did you know Mia Hamm and I are great buds? and b) you know you're getting old when your dreams turn into dreams for your children. But I digress.

We've been TiVo'ing the women's soccer games throughout the Olympics, and for almost all of the games, I couldn't help but notice on SI.com or CNN.com the result before I actually watched the game. But once the US Women got into the gold medal match, I spent all of today physically restraining myself from going to any website that might reveal the outcome, and staying away from any radio or TV broadcasts. Seriously--this morning when I went in to round on my patients at the hospital, the game was on in the breastfeeding room at the hospital. I think that's awesome, but I REALLY didn't want to know the score.

So I'm sure you've all heard about the US Women winning the gold. After the disappointment of the World Cup last year, redemption is pretty effing sweet. But I have to say, watching the medal ceremony chokes me up a bit and brings a little tear to my eye. I wish I could've been there. And the best part, the players singing the anthem. I've always wanted to be in the Olympics, since I was 9 years old watching them in LA in 84 (minus women's soccer then!). I know my time is past, but there still is that little hope that one of my kids one day might be able to stand on a podium and sing their national anthem at the top of their lungs. And even if they don't, they can watch the gold medal matches with me and hope for future. Congrats Team USA--it's been a fun Olympics watching you...

 Summertime
Here's a pic of my little baby girl playing in her froggy pool last month. We need to get her out in that a bit more--it's already starting to get pretty cold here at night, and the summer is definitely winding down.

Took Big C in for her 9 month check up today. She weighed 18 pounds, 4 ounces (41st percentile), was a little over 28 inches long (80th percentile) and I forget what her head was, but it was in the 80th percentile as well. She's pointing, clapping, waving, picking up food with a pincer grasp, crawling EVERYWHERE, pulling herself to stand, and just starting to cruise on furniture. Saying mama and dada, and sometimes I think she gets dada right. Sleeps 12 hours at night, takes a good 1-2 hour nap in the morning and usually a 2 hour nap in the afternoon. She loves Good Night Moon (especially pointing at the red balloon), her sock monkey Louis, and her First Laptop. Apparently we've been a bit too liberal with the carrots and sweet potatoes as my partner mentioned how she has a very slight orangy glow. Mark just told her we've been using spray tan. She's doing great with her sippy cups, and we're just starting to do more table food--she was all about an avocado last weekend, will take bits of bread from us, and is starting to eat puff and crackers and such. She's also in this big screeching phase, and we're trying to get her to babble instead, which sometimes works, and sometimes she'll just screech at the top of her lungs anyway. She gets very bored with her exersaucer very quickly these days, so it's tough to get a quick shower in since she'll just start screaming until you take her out of there. She loves being at daycare and around the other kids, which is fun to see.

I think that's about it for the Caroline update. The two of us leave next Thursday for Chicago, staying until the 7th. Mark isn't coming until about a week later because of work, so hopefully the flight will go smoothly with just the two of us. It's always nice having another set of hands around when traveling with a baby, so we'll see how this goes.

OK, today is my only day off until next Thursday when my vacation starts, so now that Big C is down for her nap, I believe it's time for mine!

 New video of Caroline.

(PS, it's OK to laugh).
